Mtre Alice Popovici, Montreal’s new Bâtonnière
Evolve with Purpose

The Barreau de Montréal’s general meeting was held at the Montreal Courthouse yesterday, May 7. The event marked the beginning of the term of office of Mtre Alice Popovici, who takes over from Mtre Valérie Assouline to become Montreal’s Bâtonnière. Mtre Popovici is the 161st person and the 11th woman to fill this role in the section’s history.

Professional background
Admitted to the Quebec Bar and the Law Society of Upper Canada in 2011, Mtre Popovici has practiced family law since the beginning of her career. After practicing with a national firm and then a boutique firm, both specialized in family law, she founded her own firm, Popovici Family Law Inc.,in 2014.
Driven by a deep passion, Mtre Popovici supports and represents her clients in all matters related to separation and divorce with rigour, commitment and compassion. She has an active practice while remaining deeply involved in the life of the Montreal Bar as an institution. She has been on the Council for 7 years. A committed member, Mtre Popovici has successively acted as Councillor, Treasurer and First Councillor. Her active role on the Council over the past year has allowed her to play a tangible role in the discussions and decisions that will shape the future of the Montreal Bar. In the past, she also served on the Board of Directors of the Young Bar Association of Montreal and participated in various Bar committees, demonstrating an ongoing commitment to the profession and the legal community.
Evolve With Purpose, a theme that underscores the importance of striving for the best
Convinced that the profession must evolve responsibly and with purpose, Mtre Popovici intends to continue to promote the fundamental values of the Montreal Bar, including the protection of the public, professional excellence and member involvement. Bâtonnière Popovici has chosen Evolve With Purpose as the theme for her term. With this conviction, she intends to inspire the Montreal Bar in its mission to protect the public and support section members in the performance of their duties.
Clear priorities
The priorities for Mtre Popovici’s term of office align with the initiatives related to the 2025-2029 strategic plan, for which she will oversee the second year of implementation. The main objectives of her term are:
- Continue to evolve the governance of the Council, in particular by strengthening governance practices, improving decision-making mechanisms and increasing oversight of strategic issues and risks;
- Strengthen the Montreal Bar’s position by implementing expert recommendations in order to increase its visibility and foster sustained collaboration with stakeholders in the legal community, for the benefit of the public;
- Continue awareness campaigns regarding the illegal practice of law, maintaining a high level of commitment;
- Ensure sound financial governance and rigorous risk management by the Council, in particular by consolidating budget monitoring mechanisms, organizational risk management frameworks, and guidelines for the thoughtful, ethical and secure integration of artificial intelligence;
- Promote the professional development of our members, in particular by establishing a mentoring program that pairs experienced attorneys with those seeking to further their professional development.

Other than Bâtonnière Alice Popovici, the 2026-2027 Council consist’s of Mtre Marie-France Lebel (First Councillor) as well as 11 councillors: Mtres Cynthia Brunet, Harry H. Dikranian, Julien Dion, Sophie Estienne, Gabrielle Gayrard, Peter Moraitis, Patrycja Nowakowska, Félix Rhéaume, Marc-André Séguin, Joey Suri and Pascale Vigneau.
