Annual General Meeting


Given present circumstances and in concert with the Barreau du Québec, Council has decided to suspend the application of article 17 of its General Bylaw and to postpone the annual general assembly to a date to be determined.

ELECTION OF THE COUNCIL 2020-2021 (Held as planned)

The affairs of the Section are managed by a Council composed of 13 members consisting of 4 officers and 9 councillors, including at least 1 representative of the Young Bar of Montreal, elected by the Members having the right to vote. At least 4 members of the Council must be English-speaking.

The term of office of the members whose names follow expires on May 6, 2020:

  • Bâtonnier, Mtre Alexandre Forest,
  • First Councillor, Mtre Francisco Couto,
  • Treasurer, Mtre Robin Schiller,
  • Secretary, Mtre Jonathan Pierre-Étienne,
  • Councillors, Mtre David Ettedgui, Mtre Extra Junior Laguerre, Mtre Caroline Larouche and
    Mtre Julie Mousseau.
  • Representative of the Young Bar of Montreal, Mtre Alice Popovici.

The Councillors whose names follow remain in office until the election of 2021:
Mtre Valérie Assouline, Mtre Pierre-Luc Beauchesne, Mtre Alex Goupil and Mtre Chantale Massé.

To be elected this year:

One-year term:

  • Bâtonnier (English-speaking this year, according to a tradition which is not constraining but goes back to 1922, that a French-speaking Bâtonnier be elected two years in succession and an English-speaking Bâtonnier the third year)
  • First Councillor (French-speaking)
  • Treasurer (French-speaking)
  • Secretary (French or English-speaking)
  • Representative of the Young Bar of Montreal (French-speaking)

Two-year term:

  • 3 English-speaking councillor (to have at least four English-Speaking members).
  • 1 councillor.

Practising advocates who have paid their contribution for the current year in accordance with paragraph 2 of section 68 of An Act respecting the Barreau du Québec are eligible for a position on the Council. A candidate for the office of Bâtonnier must have been a member of the Council within the 5 years preceding the date of the election. A candidate for the office of First Councillor must have been a previous member of the Council. The candidates for the position of Secretary and representative of the Young Bar of Montreal must be members of the Young Bar of Montreal.

Nomination of candidates shall be made in writing on a nomination form, indicating the position which is sought, signed by at least 2 and not more than 10 members of the Section and filed at the office of the Bar of Montreal before 4:00 P.M., on April 1, 2020.
