So that articling students participate in a swearing-in ceremony that reflects the solemn nature of the event, the Bar of Montreal holds several swearing-in ceremonies throughout the year. Each of these ceremonies takes place in the presence of a representative of the Bench, who acts as Honorary President. This person and the Bâtonnier or First Councillor and a representative of the Young Bar of Montreal speak on each such occasion. Members of the Council land former Bâtonniers also attend the ceremonies.

To maintain the decorum such ceremonies deserve, the guests of honour and the articling students must wear the appropriate robe and collar.

In 2016-2017, the Bâtonnier and the First Councillor presided over 21 group swearing-in ceremonies at which 654 new lawyers were sworn in. They also arranged 20 private ceremonies for some 33 articling clerks, for a total of 687 new advocates.
