Using the analogy of a woolly mammoth—representing the various stress factors in modern life—to illustrate her point, Sonia Lupien, Ph.D., studies stress mechanisms and the effect of stress on performance and memory. During this talk, Dr. Lupien will discuss different stress-related issues in order to dispel misconceptions about stress, deconstruct it and finally help you to understand it.

What are the effects of stress on health? Why do we develop belly fat, or are plagued by depression or anxiety when chronically stressed? Combining science with examples from everyday life, Dr. Lupien describes how stress can lead to mental and physical illness. By applying, on a day-to-day basis, the simple and practical techniques she will propose, it will be easier for you to control your stress response and no longer feel its effects on your brain and body.

Dr. Lupien has a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Université de Montréal, and is Scientific Director of the Research Centre of the Institut universitaire en santé mentale de Montréal, Director of the Centre for Studies on Human Stress (CSHS), Chair on Sex, Gender and Mental Health of the Institute of Gender and Health, Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), and a full professor with the Department of Psychiatry at Université de Montréal.
