Annual General Assembly


The Annual General Meeting of the Bar of Montreal will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 2019, at 5:30 P.M., in the Jules-Deschênes room (5.15) of the Montreal Courthouse (10 St-Antoine Street East, Old Montreal). A member who wishes to submit a question at the meeting shall address it in writing to the office of the Bar of Montreal before 4:00 P.M., on April 1, 2019, to have it placed on the agenda.

The affairs of the Section are managed by a Council composed of 13 members consisting of 4 officers and 9 councillors, including at least 1 representative of the Young Bar of Montreal, elected by the Members having the right to vote. At least 4 members of the Council must be English-speaking.

The term of office of the members whose names follow expires on May 8, 2019:

  • Bâtonnier, Mtre Michel P. Synnott,
  • First Councillor, Mtre Alexandre Forest,
  • Treasurer, Mtre Francisco Couto,
  • Secretary, Mtre Sophia M. Rossi,
  • Councillors, Mtre Michael N. Bergman, Mtre Marie Cousineau, Mtre Alexandra Popa and Mtre Robin Schiller.
  • Representative of the Young Bar of Montreal, Mtre Alex Goupil.

The Councillors whose names follow remain in office until the election of 2020: Mtre David Ettedgui, Mtre Extra Junior Laguerre, Mtre Caroline Larouche and Mtre Julie Mousseau.

To be elected this year:

One-year term:

  • Bâtonnier (French-speaking this year, according to a tradition which is not constraining but goes back to 1922, that a French-speaking Bâtonnier be elected two years in succession and an English-speaking Bâtonnier the third year)
  • First Councillor (English-speaking)
  • Treasurer (English-speaking)
  • Secretary (French or English-speaking)
  • Representative of the Young Bar of Montreal (English-speaking)

Two-year term:

  • 4 councillors

Practising advocates who have paid their contribution for the current year in accordance with paragraph 2 of section 68 of An Act respecting the Barreau du Québec are eligible for a position on the Council. A candidate for the office of Bâtonnier must have been a member of the Council within the 5 years preceding the date of the election. A candidate for the office of First Councillor must have been a previous member of the Council. The candidates for the position of Secretary and representative of the Young Bar of Montreal must be members of the Young Bar of Montreal.

Nomination of candidates shall be made in writing on a nomination form, indicating the position which is sought, signed by at least 2 and not more than 10 members of the Section and filed at the office of the Bar of Montreal before 4:00 P.M., on April 1, 2019.
